Make It In AmericaThe author, former CEO for Dow Chemical, stresses the importance of manufacturing and the value of making sure that the USA continues to be a manufacturing powerhouse. We’ve been losing jobs over the last several years to overseas competition, putting even greater and greater strains on our economy, by relying more on service industry jobs rather than manufacturing jobs.

“Manufacturing jobs” have a huge “multiplier effect”. For every dollar that manufacturing creates, it also creates $1.40 in additional associated opportunities. “Service-oriented jobs” create only half of that.

The average corporate tax rate in Europe is about 14%, whereas the United States has a corporate tax rate of 35%. This is one of the things that need to be addressed in order to “level the playing field” and keep more manufacturing jobs here in the United States.

In August 2014, Burger King, elected to move its corporate headquarters to Canada, in order to take advantage of more advantageous corporate tax structures offered there.

The R & D (research and development) tax credit, is another incentive for businesses to invest in their own businesses here in the United States. Unfortunately, it is something that is reviewed and voted upon, only every couple of years by Congress, and it makes it difficult for corporations to plan ahead into the future.

In addition to re-creating our manufacturing sector, the author goes into a good amount of detail in regards to our educational system, our infrastructure, our tax/tariffs programs, and ways to build “a better America.”

Take a look at all those Christmas gifts that you are purchasing this holiday season.  Any guess at where they are manufactured and made?  Now multiply that by tens of millions of homes doing the very same thing on this Christmas holiday.  With our increasing demand for “cheap goods and products” and “lower manufacturing costs”, we are “doing it to ourselves” as we continue to put our country at a disadvantage on the global marketplace.

The author does a very good job of helping us to take a look at how our economy used to work, and what we need to do to help rev it up again and get it back on top of things.  Even for those who are not interested in “economics”, this book is still easy enough to read and understand and get the general gist of why we are losing that competitive edge on a global scale.
