MADISON, Wis. – You’ve probably seen CBD oil on store shelves or even advertised on TV. It’s a cannabis-based product derived from hemp, not from a marijuana plant. It’s become so popular that some companies are manufacturing CBD oil for our pets. But for many pet owners, a lot of questions remain. Is it safe? Does it work? What’s the proper dosage?

Holistic veterinarian Dr. Carrie Donahue of Full Circle Vet Clinic in Madison is a believer in the effectiveness of CBD oil for our furry friends. She started recommending its use for dogs and cats that had seizures.

Does your pet suffer from arthritis, anxiety, or inflamations due to cancer? CBD oil for pets might offer some relief. Tune in to Tonight at Ten. A local holistic vet and a local dog owner say CBD oil made all the difference in their pet’s lives.

Donahue said after using it for seizures, she started using it to treat animals suffering from anxiety. “It’s very, very helpful in keeping animals calm,” she saID. She’s also used it for treating immune-related issues, cancer-related inflammation, allergies, even arthritis.

CBD oil is derived from the hemp plant and it’s legal to manufacture, legal to sell and legal to buy. It is not, however, approved by the Food and Drug Administration for animal treatment, so most vets can’t or won’t recommend it’s use, but you can still legally buy it. If you want to try it on your pet, Donahue suggests you only buy CBD oil made for pet use. The human products are too concentrated for dogs and cats.

Sound too good to be true? Donahue said that while it helps with a lot of conditions, it’s not a miracle supplement.

“It’s not like, in every animal that uses it, you will see such a significant change. Sometimes the changes are very, very subtle,” Donahue said. “I don’t think it’s across the board something that’s going to change everything, but at least you know it’s natural, it’s not going to do any harm and it might have a positive effect.
