You might not realize how common burnout is, and that’s because most people don’t realize it’s happening until it’s too late.

If you’re exhausted, feeling detached, and moody, and you wonder how you get to this point – there’s a good chance you’re burning out physically and mentally.

If you want to avoid burnout, you will need to find ways to incorporate self-care into your daily routine. It’s an essential part of looking after your well-being, emotionally, physically, and mentally. It can help you battle stress and keep burnout at bay.

Self-Care Banishes Burnout

There are varying ways that self-care helps you beat burnout.

The first is the most important – self-care is key to reducing your stress levels. Burnout is the direct response to your body experiencing chronic stress. So, by consistently practicing self-care, you can avoid reaching the high-stress levels that lead to burnout.

A side effect of this stress reduction that comes with self-care is that it improves your sleep quality. Stress and burnout make sleep difficult, whether it’s that you struggle to fall asleep or you struggle to stay asleep, it hurts! Good sleep is so important, so creating a healthy sleep routine is key to managing stress and self-care is part of that.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that as a result of all that, self-care can improve your mood. If you practice activities that fulfill you, that’s nourishing your emotions and mind, which is good news for your mood. It can also give you a healthy increase in energy. The less stressed you are, the more rested you are, the happier you feel, well… you’ll be more energized to tackle any challenge that comes your way.

#James Donaldson notes:
Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.
Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.
Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.

Daily Routine

You’re busy, so how on earth are you going to make time for self-care?

The benefits are clear, you can’t afford to not make time for self-care.

It’s important to remember that self-care will look different for everyone because what works for you might not work for someone else and vice versa.

Time management is an act of self-care, so sit down and create your weekly plan, and while you do that, schedule self-care!

Whether you’re into exercise as self-care, or you want to practice certain activities, or hobbies, or just get enough sleep, you need to put it on the schedule to ensure it happens.

What do you classify as self-care? Spending time with friends or family? Meditation? A professional massage? A bubble bath? Reading with a glass of wine?

It’s worth pointing out that self-care isn’t a one-time thing. It’s an ongoing journey and you should make time for some form of self-care daily. That doesn’t mean you have to do the same things every day, you can mix things up. But things like exercise, good sleep, and eating well should be a regular feature.

If you struggle to make it into the daily schedule, start by aiming for a few days a week. The more you practice self-care and see its benefits, the easier it will get to make it a daily thing. If you don’t get there right away, don’t worry – you don’t need to beat yourself up over it. Keep at it until you get there.
