Edward O Wilson, author of this fantastic book, really takes us on a journey of the history of mankind, but goes even further, to search for “The Meaning of Human Existence”.
He’s got a great delivery style, which makes studying science and history, not overly technical, but actually enjoyable, has he can “paint a picture” better than most people, and he is done that throughout his lengthy career.
He takes us on a journey of the history of mankind, from the time that we evolved from apelike creatures, and also he goes into the particular habits and behaviors that we’ve developed over the eons. Why are we different, and what makes us different than other animals? Wilson points out, that due to the fact of our relatively large brain capacity, and our intelligence levels, we are essentially the only animal species, that is figured out how to use tools (yes, a few other species use simple tools as well), imagine our future, you’re in for immortality, and do our best to extend our lives as long as we can.
Humans have gone on to conquer the world and every other animal species in it. Now, we’ve reached a point in time, where we have to be a little more conscientious of our environment, and our ability to destroy the environment. While other animals species are vanishing at an alarming rate, humans continue to thrive, and even look towards extending our colonies to outer space.
Wilson makes you feel fantastic being a human being. Rather than being a simple animal species, that relies on instinct and seasonal behaviors, humans actually can think, create, imagine, plan for the future, build great cities, choose and make (good and bad) decisions, and so much more.
Even if you don’t enjoy reading about science and history, Edward O Wilson, will make it much more enjoyable for you.
Enjoy this fantastic book, I learned so much, and in looking to reading a few more of Edward all Wilson’s books, to learn even more.
