Recent studies indicate that #CBD can interact with the #endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the body to decrease #depression symptoms. Pre-clinical studies confirm the potential of #CBD as an effective antidepressant. Read on for more information on how #CBD may help relieve #depression.
JamesDonaldson notes:
Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.
Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.
Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space. #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticle

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
#Depression is a #mentalhealth disorder associated with morbidity and mortality. It is a major risk factor for #suicide, abuse of substances, bad health, and impaired functionality. It is defined by mood flattening, loss of emotional expression, and thought and movement retardation.
Individuals with #depression typically have a dull mood. They lose interest in operations they once found amusing. #Depression can also lead to sleep disruption, energy loss, and a decrease of #mental focus.
#DEPRESSION AFFECTING PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD
Every year, 25% of Europeans suffer from #depression or #anxiety, according to the #WorldHealthOrganization. Between 2009 and 2012, approximately 7.6% of Americans at the age of 12 and above were diagnosed with #depression, and it was more common among females and people between the ages of 40 and 59.
#Depression was discovered to occur in children at an incidence rate of 0.9% in pre-school-age kids, 1.9% in elementary and middle school-age kids, and about 4.7% by high school age. #Depression happens in boys and girls at an equal pace in prepubescent kids and the incidents of severe #depression generally rise with age.
WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY
In 2016, researchers found that #CBD triggered “rapid and sustained” antidepressant-like effects in rodent models. While monitoring #CBD’s engagement with the serotonin receptor the researchers discovered that the #cannabinoid generated these effects.
In the above scenario #CBD accessed or interacted with serotonin reserved cell receptors. Cell receptors are like tiny locks on the surface of the cell, waiting for the involvement of chemical messengers to access it, in this case the chemical messenger was #CBD.
This holds importance because serotonin is the targeted neurotransmitter for some of the most common antidepressant drugs, including Prozac, Lexapro, and Zoloft. Therefore #CBD may act similar to antidepressants for treating #depression but without the risks of side effects or addiction.
Another article released in August 2018 found that small doses of #CBD coupled with small doses of generic Prozac effectively enhanced #depression-related behavior in mice under stress. This study also verified that #CBD’s involvement with serotonin appeared to generate an antidepressant impact.
While there are presently no clinical trials of #CBD for human #depression, some proof suggests that there are patients who find cannabis medications lowered their depression symptoms. A 2017 Canadian medical cannabis study found that 63% of patients reported cannabis preference over prescription medicines.
HOW COULD CBD HELP WITH #DEPRESSION
In the therapy of #depression, #CBD has been discovered to be efficient. Although #CBD does not cure the disease 100%, it may reduce the symptoms dramatically.
It is becoming common knowledge that the human body generates its own #cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. Now as you can see multiple studies showcase that phytocannabinoids (like #CBD) can interact with the body’s internal ECS.
#Endocannabinoids help in controlling multiple functions of the body, including mood, pain, sleep and appetite. #CBD can exercise its activity by binding to specific points of cells called receptors (CB1 and CB2). These receptors are a major part of the ECS. This interaction can potentiate the activity of a substance called serotonin. Serotonin acts to boost mood and lower stress concentrations.
#CBD was discovered to assist to enhance depressive symptoms by modulating endocannabinoid activities and also potentiating serotonin impacts by improving receptor activity to which serotonin binds.
CONCLUSION
CBD oil may help considerably to reduce the symptoms of depression and enhance the quality of life of the individual. While some promising evidence exists for the future use of #CBD as an antidepressant, more human research is needed to determine how safe and effective it is. It should be observed, however, that #CBD does not provide a cure for the disease, but leads the patient to a better quality of life.
