If you are experiencing any of these symptoms for longer than 2 weeks, be sure to talk with a doctor right away.
It’s normal to feel sad at times, but a long period of feeling low can point to a mental health condition like depression or anxiety.
A primary care doctor is the best place to start.
They might order tests, such as blood work, to see if there is a medical reason for your depression.
Lab tests are important because certain medicines and medical conditions can cause the same symptoms as depression.
1 The doctor will also talk with you to find out more about your symptoms and how they’re affecting you.
They might ask questions like: How do you feel about your emotions and mental health today compared to how you were feeling a year ago?
Do your emotions or mental health make it hard to get work done or get through the day?
Do your feelings stop you from going out or doing the things you used to love?
